We Are Fearfully And Wonderfully Made

February 5, 2010

Our bodies are amazing things. They are made up of many cells, muscles, tissue, nerves and organs that all function together. They are designed to resist disease and illness and even to recuperate from life threatening forces.

I love the way that David says it in Psalm 139:14, “I will praise thee; for I am fearfully and wonderfully made: marvelous are thy works; and that my soul knoweth right well” (KJV).

I appreciate medical science and the great advances that have been made. I heard a relative’s oncologist say, “I am only an instrument. There is a Greater Physician that brings health and healing to human bodies.”

Many years ago my sister-in-law had a brain aneurysm. She was rushed to Houston by helicopter. Believers everywhere were saying prayers and we were so thankful.

The chief neurosurgeon opted to try two procedures hoping to avoid external skull surgery. He went in with a tube in the groin area, up her side, through the side of her neck and into her brain. Once at the location of the aneurysm, the doctor and assistants tried their first procedure. It failed. The second procedure also failed. Since she had already been on the operating table five hours, the doctors decided to try one last procedure before removing the tube.

They decided to shut down the artery that was supplying the blood to the aneurysm. The danger in doing that could cause paralysis, but a decision had to be made quickly.

At the very instant the surgeons shut down the affected artery, arteries from the other side of the brain rushed blood to the affected side. The doctors were jubilant. There was no paralysis. They had just witnessed a miracle!

Who told those arteries to help out? Did some cell from the primordial slime pit millions of years ago decide there would be in a human body someday and might have to supply blood to someone’s brain? Hardly.

Where there is creation there is a Creator. Where there is a design there is a Designer. You will find it in Genesis 1:27 “So God created man in his own image, in the image of God created he created him, male and female he created them. (NIV)

Genesis also goes further…” the Lord God formed the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living being” (Genesis 2:7

(NIV).

Healing was a main aspect of Jesus’ ministry and it’s a comforting thought to know that Jesus hears prayers. It gives hope and peace to a child of God. What a frightening thing it would be to have a serious illness and have no hope for eternity.

Proverbs 4:20-22 says it all: “My son, attend to my words; incline thine ear unto my sayings. Let them not depart from thine eyes; keep them in the midst of thine heart. For they are life unto those that find them, and health to all their flesh.”

Yes, we are fearfully and wonderfully made.

I’m so glad God made you and me!
