What's Right With Our Country

June 4, 2004

It seems bad news is presented every day.  Seldom do we hear about things we enjoy, love and often take for granted.  On any given day, we always have more blessings than problems.  I’ve been thinking about what is right about our country and I‘ve come up with a lot of good news.  If you add yours to mine, we would run out of paper.  The next time you feel down about all the negatives, think about the positives.  They are all around us, just waiting to be appreciated.  One never misses something until it is taken away.    Here are some of the many, many things I love about nation:

Attending the church of my choice

Voting at the polls and having a voice

Marrying the love of my life

Shows with Andy Taylor and Barney Fife

Seeing a Nativity scene down the street

A hug and a laugh from those I greet

Christmas carols that bring me cheer

My loving Savior who is always near

A dream come true with a lot of hard work

A loving father whose role is not shirked

An older couple with a haltering stride

Reading the Bible for a lifetime guide

Hearing “Taps” played with a trickling tear.

Living in America, free without fear.

Seeing flags flying on “Veterans Day”

Hearing the laughter of children at play

Steeples on churches with bells that chime

Teachers explaining lessons one more time

Forgiving those who trespass against me

Being proud of ancestors and the family tree.

Farmers who work from dawn until night

            Restaurants opening at morning’s light

            Mountain moving faith, refusing defeat

Giving a smile to everyone you meet

People praying for others, sacrificing their time

Not holding grudges nor deceit in the mind

Remembering veterans who gave us their all

Being proud of our country and standing tall

Righting the wrongs wherever you can

Living at peace with your fellowman

A cherish of freedom and the blessings brought

Honoring the memory of those who have fought.

What’s right with our country?  Why is it so grand?

It’s God-fearing people who take a right stand!
