How Big Is God?

March 23, 2003

At night my husband and I love to sit in our swing and look at the stars.  One night he remarked:   “People have been seeing these same stars for centuries.  I wonder if they ever realize the scope of God’s creation.”  We talked about God’s greatness a long time.

God has put the stars in place and “He counts the stars and names each one”  (Psalm 147:4 NCV).  I’m sure the astronauts talk about it too.  I heard a story about some space scientists that were measuring time back and forth over centuries.  They had to have this information to lay out orbits in terms of the life of satellites.  The computer came to a stop with a red signal.  It had found a day missing in space.  The missing time puzzled these scientists until one spoke up about remembering a story from Sunday school in his childhood.  The lesson told of the sun standing still for about a day.  He got a Bible and found Joshua 10:12-14:  “On the day that the LORD gave up the Amorites to the Israelites, Joshua stood before all the people of Israel and said to the LORD: ‘Sun, stand still over Gibeon.  Moon, stand still over the Valley of Aijalon.’  So the sun stood still and the moon stopped until the people defeated their enemies.”  God is big!

If our planet earth were just ten percent smaller, there would be no life.  If our planet were just a few degrees closer to the sun, we would burn up.  If our planet were further away from the sun, we would freeze!  Our axis is exactly tilted so that there is equal distribution of the sun, which makes the food chain possible.  God is big!

God knows each one of us.  He knows every hair upon our heads.  Realizing the sovereignty of God, difficulties can turn into opportunities for God to show himself strong.  All things are possible for you and me, because he lives mightily in us.

God is bigger than the illness of a loved one, a misunderstanding, a financial crisis or any other problem that plagues the human soul.

God is able.  He never grows weary and his supply never runs out.  He is big enough to renew strength and to hear and answer prayers.  Nothing can compare to our God.  He is unequaled!

Psalm 19:1-4 (NIV) expresses my thoughts about God’s creation:  “The heavens declare the glory of God; the skies proclaim the work of his hands.  Day after day they pour forth speech; night after night they display knowledge.  There is no speech or language where their voice is not heard.  Their voice goes out into all the earth, their words to the ends of the world.”

The next time you have a problem, step outside and look at the sky.  Only God can make such magnificence, yet he has time for you.

        GOD is big.
