Life Everlasting

Someone has said there are two certain things in this life, “death and taxes.”  There is another certainty that far surpasses these two.  It is the undeniable fact of one’s destination in eternity.

Medical science has been able to prolong life in many cases, but sooner or later everyone leaves these earthly bodies.  No one knows the time or place when life’s journey will end, but one’s eternal destiny can be settled here and now in this life.  That decision is one of accepting God’s gift of salvation through the atoning sacrifice of His Son, Jesus.

Many scholars have tried to prove that God doesn’t exist, only to become avid believers through the process.

Centuries before Jesus came, David knew God would not leave him in the grave.  His security assured him he would have life again and live with God forever.  (Psalm 16:9-10)  “So I rejoice and am glad.  Even my body has hope, because you will not leave me in the grave.”  (NCV)

Isaiah predicted the coming of Jesus:  “Therefore the Lord himself will give you a sign: The virgin will be with child and will give birth to a son, and will call him Immanuel”  (Isaiah 7:14 NIV).

Isaiah 9:6 further assured Jesus’ coming:  “For to us a child is born to us a son is given, and the government will be on his shoulders and he will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father prince of Peace” (NIV).

The triumphant entry of Jesus riding on a donkey into Jerusalem is prophesied

In Zechariah 9:9 500 years before it happened:  “Rejoice greatly, people of Jerusalem!  Shout for joy, people of Jerusalem!  Your king is coming to you.  He does what is right, and he saves.  He is gentle and riding on a donkey, on the colt of a donkey.”  (NCV)

I believe these scriptures.  To me, it would take more faith to disbelieve!  The following poem by an unknown author makes my point:

“A neighbor watched his zigzag course, and hailed him from the lawn.

Asked him where he’d been that day and what was going on.

‘I’ve been to Sunday School’ he said and turned a piece of sod.

He picked up a wiggly worm replying, ‘I’ve learned a lot of God!’

‘Mmm, very fine way,’ the neighbor said ‘for a boy to spend his time.

If you’ll tell me where God is I’ll give you a brand new dime.’

Quick as a flash the answer came nor were his accents faint,

I’ll give you a dollar Mister, if you can tell me where God ain’t!”

Life delights in life.  In this tumultuous world of nuclear and biological warfare, Psalm 46:1-2 assures the believer’s refuge and confidence:  “God is our refuge and strength, an ever present help in trouble.  Therefore we will not fear, though the earth give way and the mountains fall into the heart of the sea.”

The Bible is very clear. Even in the face of death, God is our refuge and His strength enables us to conquer the last enemy.  Everyone dies, but believers don’t stay dead.  They enter into an eternal “Kingdom of Life.”  If we could only understand the power of the cross, would we not be caught up in joyful song all day long?  To think that Jesus has conquered death for all those who receive Him has to be the greatest news ever known to mankind.

On that glorious day we shall meet Him face to face and be changed in a twinkling of an eye and so shall we ever be with Him.  (1 Corinthians 15:52)

I read somewhere that death is simply blowing out the candle, because morning has come.

That morning is meeting Jesus.  It is life everlasting.

You come too!
