A Touch of His Greatness

January 7, 2001

The day after Christmas brought a winter wonderland! Gentle snowflakes were softly falling. They covered the boughs of my evergreen trees with photographic skill. Looking out my window, I saw a "picture perfect" postcard and I filed it away in the photo album of my memory.

Underneath this glorious sight, I silently wrote on my heart: "Though your sins are like scarlet, they shall be as white as snow; ...Though they are red as crimson, they shall be like wool," (Isaiah 1:18 NIV) and I felt an awesome touch of God's greatness.

Just as falling snow covers the barren soul of the repentant heart, Jesus' blood covers sin and makes the believer white as snow. I enjoy every season, but the beauty of winter holds a unique fascination for me. Ecclesiastes 3:1 reminds me that "To every thing there is a season, and a time to every purpose under the heaven."

Solomon's statement: "He has made everything beautiful in its time," (Ecclesiastes 3:11) makes me aware of God's greatness. Discovering, accepting and appreciating God's perfect timing is the secret of happiness. The "winter" of life reminds me that life can be quickly and unexpectedly ended.  I need to recognize that life is precious and needs to be used wisely.

On a clear starry night, God's greatness is overwhelming. I am tempted to count the stars, but then I am overcome by the magnitude of His greatness. The vast array of twinkling diamonds hang in space by His great hand and yet, He knows my name. He tells me in Jeremiah 33:22: "I will make the descendants of David my servant and the Levites who minister before me as countless as the stars of the sky and as measureless as the sand on the seashore."

I cannot count the grains of sand on a seashore, but God has included me as one of David's descendants. In this vast universe, He knows the number of the hairs upon my head. He knows everything about you and me. His love is so great He sent His only Son to die for you and for me. God is an awesome God! He is King of kings and Lord of lords. His handiwork is apparent everywhere.

The beauty of a sunrise and the evening sunsets fill me with wonder. God's masterpieces are painted with strokes of breathtaking beauty and I marvel at the greatness of the "Master Painter."

"The mountains sing for joy and the rivers clap their hands" (Psalm 98:8 NIV).

If the mountains and rivers can attest to the greatness of God, then surely I can praise His awesome name.

"The LORD is king. Let the peoples shake with fear. He sits between the gold creatures with wings. Let the earth shake. The LORD in Jerusalem is great; he is supreme over all the peoples, Let them praise your name; it is great, holy and to be feared" (Psalm 99:1-3 NCV).

Experience a touch of His greatness today. Proclaim His love in the morning and His faithfulness at night.  "For the Lord is a great God, the great King of all gods" (Psalm 95:3 TLB).
